A Different Kind of Pain Management
WE NEED TO RETHINK THE WAY WE MANAGE PAIN
Living with pain is complicated. Conventional medical treatments are often focused on interventions such as injections and medications. These alone may not completely relieve pain. Practitioners may not recognize, or have the time to treat the complexity involved in having chronic pain. Pain can affect everything: your mood, relationships, sleep, and how you function in life including your job, ability to attend activities, and do once easy things. The approach we are taking now leaves sufferers with few alternatives.

A different perspective is offered with alternative and functional medicine. Many alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic and naturopathic medicine have a more holistic approach and focus instead on optimizing a state of health, rather than solely treating disease. The emerging field of functional medicine uses advanced laboratory testing to better understand nutrition, metabolism and genetics. A healthy diet, gut microbiome, and lifestyle can significantly impact pain by improving health. Functional medicine can help tailor lifestyle interventions to improve your health and improve pain.

In my opinion, the multi-faceted nature of pain is better addressed with a more comprehensive approach. It should be tailored to the individual and focus on improving function and quality of life by addressing factors that cause pain and using treatments that promote health. We are unique, and our treatment should be too.

Functional Medicine
ADDRESSING THE ROOT CAUSE OF DISEASE
Functional Medicine is often referred to as "root cause medicine." It seeks to understand the cause of disease and to restore function thorough knowledge of how our bodies function. This kind of medicine works with conventional medicine in order to optimize health and function. It focuses on adopting diet and lifestyle changes as the foundation of health, and uses lab and genetic testing to guide interventions
Prolotherapy
A REGENERATIVE TREATMENT FOR DYSFUNCTION IN TENDONS AND LIGAMENTS
An often overlooked cause of musculoskeletal pain is dysfunction of tendons and ligaments. As we age and suffer injury, tendons and ligaments often are the first part of our musculoskeletal system to show signs of degeneration. Conventional medical treatments do not address degeneration of tendons and ligaments. Prolotherapy can treat this source of pain and restore function.

Using alternative forms of treatment such as acupuncture, chiropractic treatment, massage, supplements and herbal medications can improve health and function in ways that are not possible with more conventional ways of treating pain. Addressing the complex nature of pain is important in restoring function.
